Concrete Sealer

Concrete Projects Are A Big Investment. Make Sure You're Protecting Yours!

Sealing your concrete with a sealer is a great way to protect it from various elements like water, humidity, UV rays, chemicals, and regular wear and tear from vehicles. With different sealers available for different types of concrete and different levels of protection for high traffic or varying climates, finding the right one for you is key. Sealing is a proactive approach to keeping your driveway in great shape for as long as possible.

The goal of sealing is to protect your driveway’s surface from damage and make it easier to clean by preventing dirt and dust buildup. If you experience temperature changes, sealing can prevent cracking. Additionally, it protects the driveway from sun exposure and minimizes fading. While sealing is not a must-have, it’s highly recommended for anyone looking to maintain the functionality and beauty of their driveway for the long term.

How Does Sealer Work?

Concrete is naturally porous due to the composition of its materials. People often mistake “concrete” and “cement” as the same thing, but they are not. Concrete is made of cement and other elements like sand and aggregates, while cement is derived from fired limestone and silica sources. When cement is mixed with water and other ingredients to make concrete, a chemical process called hydration occurs, creating strong bonds known as calcium silica hydrates. These bonds give concrete its strength, but also lead to microscopic pores.

Sealers work by bonding with the inorganic components of concrete to block its pores and prevent water from penetrating the surface. However, they cannot prevent water from entering under pressure. But, any absorbed water can evaporate as the sealer material allows water vapor to pass through. The lifespan of a sealer can vary, depending on factors such as the concrete surface, its repellent properties, and the environment. Sealers can be water- or solvent-based and are typically applied through low-pressure spray. They penetrate the pores of concrete to provide protection without leaving a noticeable film on the surface.

The concrete sealer works by penetrating the concrete and forming a protective layer on top of it. It can either penetrate or sit atop the surface, depending on various factors such as humidity, ambient temperature, and more.
